This site provides information about myself, R. Brent Ostrum, and professional services that I provide in the area of Forensic Document Examination (aka, FDE). If you are in need of my services, please browse the site and send me an email to discuss the specifics of your situation.

Beyond this, I use this site to provide my personal thoughts about forensic science in general.  Indeed, the website originated primarily as a personal blog.  I feel there is a lot happening in the world of forensic science and in my chosen discipline. Change is in the air. Important changes; all worthy of discussion and, in some instances, debate. A few of these things are negative in tone; others are very positive. That is the nature of change today.

I often muse about FDE-related topics and find myself writing little notes and reminders. Sometimes I remember to discuss these topics with my friends and colleagues — but a lot of the time I forget until the next time the same idea crosses my mind. That can be annoying and I have tried a number of ways to record and share these ideas.

To that end the idea of a blog came to mind. After all, doesn’t everyone have a blog? The blog section of this site is used to record my thoughts about whatever FDE-related or forensic science topic gets my attention. Although the content isn’t really aimed at a truly general audience it may be of interest to anyone and could result in some interesting discussion.

Please don’t expect truly complete or finalized ideas in the blog, unless noted. My primary intention is to record ideas and concepts without worrying a lot about format or linguistic precision.  I will update posts if/when it suits me. I hope that does not offend anyone. If you notice anything you would like to discuss please make a comment for the related post. Alternatively, you can send me a message via my contact page.

Over time the site has developed into a more general resource about FDE, forensic science, and other topics I find interesting. I plan to continue with that approach and I hope you enjoy it.
